Acquisition Madness, part 2

Here's part 2 of the books I purchased during the summer.  Plus the best of the vintage paperbacks I picked up yesterday afternoon on the first day of the Hyde Park-Kenwood Community Conference Book Sale.  Lovely sunny autumn day to be down in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, about 20 miles south from our condo way up in Rogers Park.

The top half shows a collection of hardbacks with DJs we bought at the fabulous Jackson Books in Omaha, Nebraska.  The only reason we visited Omaha was to see the new exhibits at the very impressively designed zoo. Then we investigated the restaurant scene and by chance found Jackson Books nestled in a bustling and touristy entertainment district. Nebraska is also one of the states I'd never visited. Every summer for the past ten years we try to visit at least two new states. Last year we knocked off Kansas from that list. Six left (Wyoming, Idaho, Vermont, West Virginia, and the Dakotas) and I'll have been to all 50 states in the country.

  1. John: Glad to see your book buying went well. The Dakotas are the states I know best starting with South Dakota where my grandfather first homesteaded before coming to Saskatchewan. I really like visiting Bismarck. The State Capitol is a striking building.

    1. Thanks for the tips, Bill. We've been planning on a trip to the Badlands and Theodore Roosevelt National Park for a while. But when the opportunity came to visit Alaska all else got put on hold. With luck the Dakotas will be part of our 2017 trips.

  2. Very nice. I'm not familiar with those Inspector Finch mysteries.

    1. Neither am I and I hope to become an expert on Septimus Finch in the coming weeks. ;^) He has a fantastic name for a fictional detective, policeman or not.

    1. What an amazing collection of vintage crime fiction and mysteries they had at Jackson Books in Omaha. I exercised unusual restraint and frugality when I was there. I ended up putting several books back on the shelf. When the owner saw that I was buying only vintage crime fiction she told me that Tom and Enid Schantz, owners of the erstwhile Rue Morgue Press, used to visit regularly for the very same reason.

  4. I forgot to mention that very much like those Randall Garrett Lord Darcy books.

  5. Some very cool books there. Of course, I love the Amber Dean book with that great cover, and the Margaret Millar looks nice too. I will be interested to learn more about the Inspector Finch mysteries.

  6. Just to get my hands on the McShane - such an insane title and there were even nuttier ones, none of which I own (yet). I only have there three Seance books (one unconnected of course to the other two). But I don't believe I'd turn my nose up at any of these ... well done that man.

  7. Looks like you have numbers 12, 14 and 15 in the Inspector Finch series.
