Maybe not sad, but not happy. Rather deeply human.
Pietro De Palmahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06051060020493340331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8787364257168822822.post-55370452695178438242012-11-16T11:44:30.801-06:002012-11-16T11:44:30.801-06:00Interesting to see the bilingual David McKay editi...Interesting to see the bilingual David McKay edition. Last week's FFB post by Sergio reminded me that I'd read Simenon's Le Chien jaune (The Yellow Dog) in a high school French class, now your post reminds me that consulting the English translation was strongly discouraged. Rumour was that our teacher had had The Yellow Dog pulled from our high school library - though I'd bet it was never there in the first place.Brian Busbyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04120341319506205062noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8787364257168822822.post-29566262681362906572012-11-16T09:20:41.457-06:002012-11-16T09:20:41.457-06:00This came out one year after Simenon's explosi...This came out one year after Simenon's explosion of first books, eight in 1931 alone. I'm sure Aveline took his lead from Simenon. I'd love to read a real biography of Aveline. Judging from his Wikipedia page (not all that reliable, you know) he was a fascinating man: a friend of so many renowned writers, a pioneer in French publishing, a real man of letters. A French blog reveiwed a French reissue of Double Death... and mentions Aveline's introduction to that edition in which he gives a lot of background of how and why the book came to be written. However, I've been unable to learn the publisher and date so tracking it down will be difficult. I'd very much like to read the intro.J F Norrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06473487417479127354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8787364257168822822.post-6278683298523451802012-11-16T09:02:11.860-06:002012-11-16T09:02:11.860-06:00I look forward to reading the English version of y...I look forward to reading the English version of your review, Pietro. I was really moved by this book. That doesn't happen often with me when reading a detective novel. Only Roger East's Candidate for Lilies has an ending more tragic than this one.J F Norrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06473487417479127354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8787364257168822822.post-62816509488331390152012-11-16T04:46:55.274-06:002012-11-16T04:46:55.274-06:00Hooray!
