I think when Roughead was writing no one knew that Shearing was a "she."Polly G.https://www.blogger.com/profile/14022925161132438700noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8787364257168822822.post-72769460265818137842012-11-09T14:58:35.195-06:002012-11-09T14:58:35.195-06:00This sounds good! They all sound so tempting - the sorts of book I love to get lost in.......BIG sigh.Yvettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08919246184376538331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8787364257168822822.post-80689361153295989822012-11-09T14:50:55.389-06:002012-11-09T14:50:55.389-06:00Nice writeup, John. I tend to track down any book with a rave from Cuppy or Anthony Boucher or Dorothy B Hughes who were three of the most passionate reviewers of detective and mystery ficiton in the 20th century. They thoroughly understood what made mystery novels so appealing, knew the very good from the merely routine, and proved their love of the genre to be infectious.J F Norrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06473487417479127354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8787364257168822822.post-68613371372888578502012-11-09T10:57:21.021-06:002012-11-09T10:57:21.021-06:00Will Cuppy--now there's a name from the past. ...Will Cuppy--now there's a name from the past. I remember in the 1970s we had a book in our home by Cuppy called The Decline and Fall of Practically Everybody. All I remember about it was the line illustrations that--if memory serves--were quite funny. I didn't know if his work as a critic or his connection to the mystery genre.Debnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8787364257168822822.post-47876849342627596432012-11-09T10:27:12.605-06:002012-11-09T10:27:12.605-06:00Wow.
