From what I know THE WHIPPING BOYS is about a gang, a spinster who died of fright, and the young man who is thought to have been responsible for her death. I looked up my remembered title on a search engine (not Google): Guy Cullingford, The Whipping Boys. This turned out to be a huge mistake as the search decided that I meant 'gay whipping boys' rather than Guy Cullingford, The Whipping Boys. I really cannot recommend the resulting list of links.
Anyway, not going to let that put me off, will look further at this author, she sounds very interesting. Still, it was fun to read your review, John. I'll just sit here and pine away for books I can't have. The entire review denigrates the book for being a novel! Taylor is talented, literate, witty, observant, satiric -- everything that I look for when I want to read fiction, not just mystery fiction. If Conjurer's Coffin is less of a detective novel than a crime novel that doesn't mean it ought to dismissed so severely and so petulantly.

Taylor has been praised by German crime fiction critic Thomas Wörtche who called her "woefully underestimated" in the only critical essay I've found about her writing online. The single paragraph is worth reading even if you have to resort to Google translate. She appears in the essay alongside such talents as Highsmith, Ellroy, and Ian Rankin among others.J F Norrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06473487417479127354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8787364257168822822.post-22820335755236471872016-09-02T08:39:57.563-05:002016-09-02T08:39:57.563-05:00I see I commented on your review of Post Mortem, b...I see I commented on your review of Post Mortem, but not much has changed since then. Cullingford is still residing on my wishlist. However, you've once again convinced me to ignore the reviews on the GAD Wiki and give her a shot somewhere down the line.
