Have just downloaded this one, so will come back to your review when I have read it. I've known a few matronly types your description reminded me of. In fact at this moment I have a distinct case of heebie jeebies (or it might just be the chilled air in the library here). The Wheel Spins is a great book in my opinion, though I think the BBC 2013(?) version did a better job at the ending, where I think White lost her dramatic edge a little. I've watched The Spiral Staircase and there is a difference between it and the book, but I think both can be enjoyed. The suspense and tension in the book is brilliant.Katehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05616800837907092489noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8787364257168822822.post-13447277134349779392016-07-01T12:16:29.081-05:002016-07-01T12:16:29.081-05:00I'm surprised you didn't get a review copy...I'm surprised you didn't get a review copy of this from Greyladies. It was slated for publication in April 2016, but I think it only just got released a few weeks ago. I've had the Paperback Library Gothic edition shown in the last photo for several years and pulled it out for a re-read when I learned that the book had been reprinted.

I've seen both of those movies but not read the books. I understand that Some May Watch is considerably different from the movie THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE which just happens to be one of my all time favorite "old dark house/lunatic murderer" movies.J F Norrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06473487417479127354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8787364257168822822.post-81385906729005629772016-07-01T12:10:36.681-05:002016-07-01T12:10:36.681-05:00This is the only book of hers I've read in its...This is the only book of hers I've read in its entirety. Years ago I tried HER HEART IN HER THROAT but loathed the ninny heroine and quit reading before I made it to Chapter Three. I plan on reading three more of her early books over the summer. One is about a man who owns a private zoo and some nasty trouble with his lions. Sounds weird enough for me!J F Norrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06473487417479127354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8787364257168822822.post-41424831429828018052016-07-01T12:08:42.797-05:002016-07-01T12:08:42.797-05:00Great review. The only two White novels I have been able to get a hold of are The Wheels Spin and Some Must Watch (which I foolishly read home alone on a stormy night). I must say that the film versions of THE LADY VANISHES is SO much better than White's book. But I kind of liked FEAR STALKS THE VILLAGE - good but not great. Have you read that one?

I'll add THE THIRD EYE to my vintage list anyway, only because you make it sound so good.Yvettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08919246184376538331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8787364257168822822.post-91490066792494070812016-07-01T09:44:04.236-05:002016-07-01T09:44:04.236-05:00Love the cover on the PAPERBACK LIBRARY edition! ...Love the cover on the PAPERBACK LIBRARY edition!
