A most fascinating period treated by a master. Heading off now to hunt for Tunnel. This would be a great book to read and I will look for a copy... when I am buying books again. I'll amend that when I get home.

I've never heard or read the word "cenotaph" that I can recall until this book. Call me sheltered.

I think the Italian edition cover is only a spoiler if you already know the final twist. Millar definitely fooled me with that bit. He also pissed me off.J F Norrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06473487417479127354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8787364257168822822.post-29930843488138679832016-03-11T16:48:34.322-06:002016-03-11T16:48:34.322-06:00I'd never seen the cover of Il Tunnel, John. If so, I suppose its use can be considered another trace of his Canadian upbringing. I do hear 'arriviste' from time to time - invariably uttered someone older. Such a great word, I'd like to use it myself but it simply won't stick.

Small correction: Millar attended the University of Western Ontario (there is no University of Ontario). Coincidentally, the little town in which I find myself living sits roughly halfway between Western (as its known) and Kitchener (where Millar lived the bulk of his childhood). Of course it's not in western Ontario at all, but in the eastern half of the province.
