Thanks for clearing up the mystery of that hideous design.

The odd updates are in both the Intercontinental editions and the Speck editions. I think Smittenaar was one of the founding members of Intercontinental Publishing. Their first catalogs consisted almost exclusively of Dutch authors in English translation. They later branched out to novice US writers. Im' not sure it's still in business though.J F Norrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06473487417479127354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8787364257168822822.post-6082720055548453122011-08-30T02:56:50.220-05:002011-08-30T02:56:50.220-05:00Oh, and the disembodied head is a cut-out from the...Oh, and the disembodied head is a cut-out from the original cover, which you can view here.TomCathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03415176301265218101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8787364257168822822.post-36931064309603661502011-08-30T02:41:15.732-05:002011-08-30T02:41:15.732-05:00I'm glad you enjoyed the book, and it's de...I'm glad you enjoyed the book, and it's definitely the closest Appie Baantjer ever came to crossing over from a police procedural to a full-fledged, neo-classic detective story – with DeKok and the Geese of Death coming in as a close second.

I've never read one of these English translations because I always wince at what the translator has done with the names (Lowy?), but I doubt it will bother any of the non-Dutch readers.

From what I gathered, these updated portions of text are only to be found in the recent editions from Speck Press and are not to be attributed to the original translator, but I could be wrong there – and it wouldn't surprise me if this was done not to confuse American readers too much.

Anyway, thanks for participating in this small-scale tribute. I wished more people would've joined in, but hey, what you gonna do?TomCathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03415176301265218101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8787364257168822822.post-47505338658392677382011-08-29T21:28:34.718-05:002011-08-29T21:28:34.718-05:00That disembodied head is absolutely hideous. What was the cover artist thinking???

I just finished Murder on Blood Mountain and the mention of the Euro jumped out at me....but I couldn't figure out why.
