His Daffy Dill stories in that magazine are very good. Thanks for a review of one of his books. I will have to look out for them.Monte Herridgenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8787364257168822822.post-90597719423031085012012-01-20T10:35:29.888-06:002012-01-20T10:35:29.888-06:00I was unfamiliar with Sale, John. One about Daffy Dill is here and another about Candid Jones is here.

His pulp magazine writing is vast and varied beginning as early as 1931 and lasting into the early 1950s. He wrote detective fiction, weird menace thrillers, gangster tales and had at least five series characters in the pulps. There is an excellent overview of his Candid Jones stories at Mystery*File here. Some of his novellas were collected and are available in Popular Library paperbacks (MURDER AT MIDNIGHT, HOME IS THE HANGMAN and DEATH AT SEA). This is the first novel I've read. Two other novels (PASSING STRANGE and LAZARUS #7) get high praise in Bill Pronzini's 1001 Midnights.

Deb, George & Sergio (again) -

I rarely give any author info in my reviews, but Sale's bio is one I could've written a lot about. Thanks to all three of you for mentioning his life as a screenwriter. His inside knowledge of the insane world of 1940s era Hollywood turns up in a lot of his crime fiction.J F Norrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06473487417479127354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8787364257168822822.post-69548952696903666822012-01-20T09:25:33.686-06:002012-01-20T09:25:33.686-06:00I agree with Deb: THE OSCAR is a terrific book.
