This is...So glad to see you feature this one, John. This is definitely one I need to go back and read sometime. I read it well before I started blogging (although I did feature it back when I was doing my Vintage Sunday posts--highlighting books I had read pre-blog). I definitely remember enjoying all the allusions to detective fiction.Bev Hankinshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01127476456755776574noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8787364257168822822.post-11845023683967779522016-05-10T14:17:34.321-05:002016-05-10T14:17:34.321-05:00I actually didn't like it for the entire middl...I actually didn't like it for the entire middle section. So much silly stuff with Det.-Sgt. Birrell and Mrs. Tufts who are figures of ridicule with their shared phobia of sex, disapproval of public displays of affection and indecent states of dress. Tiresome. But the final chapter is a bravura performance and I smiled repeatedly when I realized that something I had dismissed as nothing more than a funny bit was actually key to the solution of the crime! Barzun was right when he called this a "brilliant tour de force". You have to be patient with this one and read very carefully.

Also, there is a lot of alluding to detective fiction which I wanted to write about but cut from my final post since this was supposed to be about travel and the wherry yacht. There are specific mentions of Sayers and Van Dine along with Birrell's constant talk of how killers think and behave that he picked up from the novels he reads. Plus! This book has the first recorded use of the term "serial murder" that I've encountered in books from this era.J F Norrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06473487417479127354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8787364257168822822.post-17237436783985303912016-05-10T13:52:00.529-05:002016-05-10T13:52:00.529-05:00It has been a long time since I have read this one...It has been a long time since I have read this one, but I do know that I definitely didn't get as much out of it as you did! Think I found it a dull read, though from your post it seems it might be worth a revisit, as your ideas on how the book treats detective fiction components interested me.Katehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05616800837907092489noreply@blogger.com
